I know it will take time for our school systems to rebound from the COVID19 pandemic DISASTER (and it was exactly that, especially in terms of education.) We started at the back of the pack and, doggone, it got worse.

What’s the truth? It’s hard to tell from what our own Superintendent of Education and Brian Kemp tell us and that’s a fact. They have a vested interest in telling their voters that everything is just fine.

Here’s the big question for everyone though and, if you’ll pardon me, it’s the elephant in the room:

If our school systems here in the State of Georgia are doing so well, why are so many affluent families pushing their kids into private schools to get better educations?

Why aren’t our public school systems’ rating higher on STEM testing?

Our General Assembly wants to push MORE money towards private schools when it is our PUBLIC schools that need the funding. Why? There are more students, more minority, and more economically disadvantaged students in public schools than in private schools, yet they want to funnel taxpayer money to private schools? I say NO! They can raise their own funding. They have the means to do that.

We need the public to PUSH for better schools. We need more community support and that means everyone-not just the parents of the children currently attending. Let’s look at it this way: those kids will be the people who are employed in our communities in the future. They will be the people who make your cars, serve your tables, be your nurse at the doctor’s appointments, drive the mail to your mailbox, deliver your packages, represent you in court, and all the myriad things you take for granted every single day. That’s who they will be. It is our responsibility to see to it that they are educated to do those jobs well and that they become good citizens.

To do that, our schools MUST have the funds to pay the teachers, staff, and administrators, to bring buildings up to code, to get IT equipment, for training, and to have the books and materials to train these children for the future. One of the problems during the pandemic was that neither the teachers nor the students knew how to properly transition to online learning. Group chats were a disaster. Bandwidth upload/download speeds were totally insufficient or nonexistent. Parents had no idea how to get their children what they needed. Access to the internet was limited by purchased minutes and dial-up modems. The entire state was back in the beginning of the internet. Insanity and confusion ruled and both teachers and students got depressed.

This has to stop NOW. But Kemp, in his infinite wisdom, did a line item veto, and took out the school system money for this year. How are the schools supposed to advance with no funding to do so? Only the Republicans can answer that question.

If I’m elected to the Georgia Senate, I promise to work for the Georgia Education system to get needed funding to improve the ratings we have. I want our public schools to thrive and grow. If they thrive, our economy will thrive. Businesses will want to come to Georgia because they’ll know that we have a commitment to education and they’ll have educated people to work for them. Let’s get this done for our future.
