That little “dueling border visit” thing that Joe Biden and Donald Trump did this week would have been hilariously funny if it hadn’t been so painfully pathetic. I’m as serious as a massive coronary.
On the one hand, you had Donald Trump fumbling his speech, supposedly tripping over Gov. Gavin Newsom’s name (he wasn’t), trying to make something fearsome about the migrants coming across the border at Eagle Pass, TX, talking about languages that “nobody speaks” (oh, yes, they do, but just because he’s unfamiliar with them doesn’t make them gibberish, but then again, HE mangles the English language so badly, I don’t know what he’s saying half the time), and supposedly bringing in diseases that we can’t control. Gee, Donald, that just reminds me of a virus that YOU were warned about in November 2019, or thereabouts, that you IGNORED and said it would just disappear like magic. Uh, hm, YOUR inability to cope with that or listen to people who did know what to do cost 1,000,000,000 people their LIVES. Yeah, we remember that. You played golf instead of doing the right thing. But now you are telling Congress to NOT pass that bill because it might help Biden while at the same time STIRRING THE POT?! You’re such a jerk.
Now Joe Biden was videoed with the Border Patrol people saying, “Hey, Donald, meet me halfway, work with me, and we’ll solve this problem together.” He’s willing to share the credit. He reached across the aisle and got support for the strictest border control bill EVER. But what happened? The House voted it down on instructions of Donald Trump who doesn’t want to give Joe Biden anything to win on. Here’s the irony: in doing that, he probably handed the election to Biden because he was such a fool. AND he probably torpedoed the chances of a good many of his sycophants as well. Do not expect tears on this side. Well, unless it is from laughing. We might do that.
That’s the thing with these people. After awhile, the lies break down under their own weight. Example, from those pictures above, the claim that migrants “take jobs” away from Americans. No, they don’t. They take jobs that Americans refuse to do, do them for lower pay, and, in most cases, do them at least three times as well and ask for more. Frequently, their bosses abuse them with impunity because they know migrants are afraid of deportation so they put them in substandard housing, do not pay them on time, beat them, make them work very long hours, sexually assault them, take away passports, take away phones, provide poor food/water, and keep them from contacting families. Does this sound like a picnic to you? Doesn’t to me.
The really funny thing to me is that I’ve met some of them and those Dreamer kids of theirs. I’ll tell you the truth-those people know the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence and can quote them to you. I was born here and I can’t do that. They know all twenty-five Amendments, too. They pay taxes and they have copies of their tax returns to prove it. They cannot get government programs like food stamps, TANF, or WIC because they do not want to give the government offices an address. It’s the same reason they won’t vote. But they know more about what’s going on than most native born citizens. They’re eager to become “real” Americans.
I’m sure there might be a criminal somewhere in there coming across the border. But I’m also sure that there is probably one or two living within a mile of my house. In fact, I know there is. There is in your neighborhood, too. I don’t know if that person is male/female, white, Black, or Latino, but I guarantee you that they are there.
Let’s all settle down and remember how this country came to be. If you are not a Native American, then you are a descendant of a migrant. Your ancestors participated in the theft, pillage, and genocide of millions of people in one way or another. They may have enslaved human beings. We are all paying the price for this in one way or another.
The least we can do is be kind to each other.
As my mother-in-law would say, y’all be sweet.
