A woman’s healthcare starts early in her life. It can be as early as age 8. It just depends on the individual. With some of the things going on in our society today, it may well start earlier if there has been something going on in her life. People do not realize that when we look at a child playing with toys that big changes are occurring within those little bodies.
Many societies not as “sophisticated” as ours recognized this long ago. This is why child marriages are a common feature in many of them. We look down upon the practice as taking away “their childhood”, and I agree, but it does recognize the biological facts. Reproductively speaking, that young female will be ready for “breeding” almost as soon as menarche takes place. I deplore the practice strenuously for many reasons. I won’t list them here because that’s not the purpose of this post, but I do have a special soapbox for that one.
Maternal healthcare/women’s healthcare (which I lump together because they overlap tremendously) is an emotionally charged yet very important discussion we must have this year. Why? Because of a group of people who want to FORCE their religious tenets down the throats of the rest of the population. That is unconstitutional to start with and morally reprehensible to boot.
If you do not want to practice birth control, DO NOT. But you have no voice in whether or not anybody else chooses to use the method of their choice to control their own fertility. It’s none of your business.
If someone decides that they need to have an abortion, dilation and evacuation, or whatever, there again, it is not your business. If you decide not to have one done for whatever reason, that is your choice. But keep your nose out of other people’s medical decisions.
If someone wants to go the IVF route to have a child, that’s their decision. If they need to use donors, again, their decision, not yours. And if they succeed in getting embryos and no longer need the excess made, what happens to the remainder is THEIR DECISION, not yours. Butt out. Your religion is your religion. Not theirs. If you want to think your thoughts, go right ahead, but keep them to yourself.
Any surgeries they decide to have for any reason is their business-whether done for gender dysphoria, sterilizations, or body modifications, are personal decisions and NONE of your business. This is what the HIPAA Act was written to protect. You have no right to that information or to make any of those decisions for any other person. It simply is none of your business. Take a hike.
ALL women need to have access to healthcare that is readily available to them that is easily available, appropriate for their needs, affordable (or free which is preferable), and provided by competent professionals in clean, hospitable, and safe surroundings. There is NO excuse for the lack of care that poor, minority, and/or rural women are getting in our country today.
I am furious (and will stay furious) at the way women from all walks of life are treated as disposable by our society just because we do not want to deal with this problem. Women are slightly over 50% of the population yet we are being forced by our own society to deal with things we should not have to deal with simply because we were born with two XX chromosomes.
I haven’t understood this since I was a child and that was a long time ago. I refuse to try now. Do not bother to tell me “that’s just the way it is” because I know for a fact that in other places in the world that it isn’t. That means anyone who tries to mollify me with that old advice is going to have it rudely shoved right back at them, so don’t even try.
Women need healthcare and we need it YESTERDAY. That includes abortion access. NOW.
